Rummy, or the indian rummy game, is one of the most popular card games of all time. Over the years, this game has traveled through different parts of the world and undergone phenomenal changes. Also known as paplu, the Indian rummy game quickly became widely popular in every corner of the country. The online game is also played using 13 cards and the objective of the game is to arrange your cards in different combinations required and make a valid declaration. Different Variants of Indian Rummy

Indian rummy is an engrossing card game that has a lot to offer. It is super-fun, entertaining and comes in several exciting variants. You can play and enjoy any of the following variants of this game:

Points Rummy: It is the fastest variant of Indian Rummy. It is a single-deal variant and each point has a predetermined monetary value in cash games.

Deals Rummy: This variant is played for a fixed number of deals and the winner of a deal has zero points.

Pool Rummy: It is the longest format of Indian Rummy that lasts for several deals. Players whose score reaches 101 points (in 101 pool) or 201 points (in 201 pool) get eliminated. The player who is left alone in the end is the winner.

Spin & Go: This is the newest addition to our rummy variants. It is an ideal way to maximize your winnings in online rummy cash games. Spin & Go is a 3-player rummy game played in a single-deal format. The game can only begin when all 3 players have joined. The prize pool is determined by the spinner before the game begins. In this variant, the winning amount can go from 2x to 10x. The estimated winning amount is determined when the spinner is spun to decide the value of the prize pool.

Indian Rummy Rules

Indian rummy is played by two to six players. Depending on the number of players, one or two standard decks of cards, plus 1 joker per deck, are used.

The objective of the indian rummy game is to arrange all your 13 cards in sequences, or sequences and sets. For a valid declaration, there should be at least two sequences, out of which at least one must be a pure sequence.

What is a sequence?

According to Indian rummy rules, a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit is called a sequence. There are two types of sequences:

Pure Sequence

A sequence in which no card is replaced by a Joker is called a pure rummy sequence. A wild Joker can be used in its original value and as a card of its original suit in a pure sequence.

Examples: These are pure sequences including the wild Joker Pure sequenes including wild joker 1

Pure sequenes including wild joker 2

Impure Sequence

A sequence in which a Joker replaces any other card is called an impure sequence.

Examples: The following are impure sequences, including the wild Joker Impure sequenes including wild joker 1 or the printed Joker:

Impure sequenes including wild joker 2

What is a set?

A set is a group of three or four cards of the same rank but different suits. A Joker can be used as a substitute card in a set.

Examples 1. Without Joker:

What is a Joker?

The Joker plays a very important role in Indian Rummy. It can replace any other card in a sequence (impure sequence) or set. There are two types of Jokers in Indian Rummy.

Printed Joker: As the name suggests, a printed Joker has the picture of a joker printed on it.

Wild Joker: At the beginning of the Indian rummy game, a random card is selected as the wild Joker and all the cards of that value then become wild jokers. For example, if the 4 of Spades gets randomly selected as the wild Joker, then the 4 of each suit will become a wild Joker in the game/deal.

How to Use Jokers in an Indian Rummy Game

As mentioned above, jokers are used as substitutes for any missing cards in a sequence or a set. After creating a pure sequence, which is mandatory for a valid declaration, you can use jokers to replace any missing cards in the remaining sequences/sets.

3. Pure Sequences

Wild Jokers can be used in pure sequences too. But in a pure sequence, a wild Joker is used in its original value and as a card of its original suit, not as a replacement for any other card. Printed Jokers cannot be used in pure sequences.

For example, if Wild Joker as replacement 1 is a wild Joker

How to Play Indian Rummy Online?

Indian rummy is played by two to six players using one or two standard decks of cards plus one printed joker per deck. Each player at the table is dealt 13 cards in a rummy game , one at a time. The remaining cards form the closed deck, kept face down on the table.

The top card from the closed deck is placed face up on the table to form the open deck. A random card is selected as a wild joker and then all the cards of that value become wild jokers for that deal/game.

A player starts the game by drawing a card from the closed deck or the open deck. On the same turn, the player has to discard one card to the open deck. The discarded card can be picked by the next player or they can pick a card from the closed deck.

On Junglee Rummy, when you have formed the required card sequences, or sequences and sets, you need to discard the 14th card from your hand to the “Finish Slot” and then declare your cards for your opponents to see.

For a valid declaration, there must be at least two sequences out of which at least one must be a pure sequence, and all your cards must be arranged in sequences, or sequences and sets.

Here is an example of a valid declaration.

How to Win at Indian Rummy Games?

Rummy is a game of skill and you need to practice playing Indian rummy online to win at it if you are a beginner. If you are just getting started with online rummy, learn all the rummy rules and play as many practice games as you can to get a good understanding of the game.

If you are familiar with the basics, you can use the following tips and tricks to level up your game:

Prioritize creating a pure sequence: When cards are dealt, focus on creating a pure sequence first. According to Indian rummy rules, a pure sequence consists of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. It is impossible to win without a pure sequence.

Observe your opponents’ moves: While playing rummy online, it is important to keep an eye on your opponents’ moves. If any opponent at the table picks a card discarded by you, do not discard any connecting card or cards of the same value on the following turns as it may help your opponent in making their required combinations before you.

Discard high-value cards early on: In Indian Rummy, your goal is to reduce your points to zero. As you know high-value cards increase your points if they remain unmatched, discard them early on unless you can easily use them in sequences or sets.

Bluff your opponents: A great strategy to outsmart your opponents is to bluff, especially when you have poor cards. When you have a bad hand, you can discard a few low-value cards and draw cards from the open deck. That will probably make your opponents think that you have an excellent hand and you are going to declare soon, and they might drop out of the game to avoid losing by a big margin.

How Points Are Calculated in Indian Rummy?

In Indian Rummy, players have to reduce their score to zero to win as points have a negative value. If you make a valid declaration, you will score zero points and win the game. The points for losing players are calculated on the basis of the ungrouped cards in their hands. For making an invalid declaration in a Points Rummy game, the player gets 80 points as a penalty. That is the highest number of points a player can get in a Points Rummy game.

When you get bad cards, you can choose to quit the game/round by using the “Drop” button. If you drop at the beginning of the game without having picked any card, you get a penalty of 20 penalty points in a Points Rummy game. If you drop in the middle of the game, you get a penalty of 40 points.

In Indian Rummy, the cards ranked from high to low are as follows: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. The face cards and aces are worth 10 points each, whereas the numbered cards are worth their face values.

Let us consider the following example:

Suppose two players play a points rummy game. Player 1 makes a valid declaration and wins the game. The calculation of points for Player 2 is shown below.

Rummy combination except a pure sequence

Status: Player 1 has created a pure sequence (9-10-J), an impure sequence (3♣-5♣-PJ) and 2 sets (K-K♠-2 (WJ) and A♠-A-A♣-A). Player 1 made a valid declaration and hence gets zero points.

Missing Turn in rummy

Status: Player 2 has created 2 pure sequences (6-7-8 and 3♠-4♠-5♠) and a set (Q♣-Q-2 (WJ)). However, the player has four cards (K♣, J, 6 and 9♠) that are not part of any sequence or set. So the player will get a penalty score equal to the sum of these ungrouped cards: 10 (K♣) + 10 (J) + 6 (6) + 9 (9♠) = 35 points.

Indian Rummy FAQs

What are the variants of Indian rummy?

Indian rummy has multiple variants such as Points Rummy, Deals Rummy, and Pool Rummy. The number of cards used are usually 13 and the scoring system can differ among these variants.

Indian Rummy is inspired by the classic version of the rummy game. It is played using 13 cards where players attempt to make a valid show by creating different combinations. This game can be played in three different variants namely: Points, Pool and Deals. In Points Rummy, the game is played for points with predetermined rupee value. Pool Rummy is played for a fixed entry that goes into the prize pool. Deals Rummy is played for a fixed number of deals where each player is allocated a fixed number of chips at the beginning of the game.

India Rummy is played using one or two standard card decks, including Jokers. Each player is dealt with 13 cards at the beginning of the game, using which different combinations are created.

Indian Rummy is played by 2 to 6 players at a time. The card decks used depend upon the number of players in a game. For example, if four players participate in a game, two card decks are used.

Jokers play a crucial role in Indian Rummy game. These cards are used to replace the missing cards in a sequence and a set. There are two types of Jokers: Wild and Printed. A random card picked at the beginning of the game becomes the wild card. For example, if 3 of Hearts is selected at random, then all the 3s from different suits are wild cards for that game. On the other hand, a printed joker is available in the card deck itself.

In order to make a valid show in Indian Rummy, players need to hold at least two sequences out of which one must be pure. The remaining melds can be either sequences or sets. A sequence is a combination of three or more consecutive cards from the same suit. A set is a group of three or four same ranked cards from different suits.

In rummy, the Ace card holds the highest value when used in a sequence with cards of high value, like King, Queen, and Jack. Otherwise, it can also be used as a low-value card.
