Interesting Rummy Variations You Must Learn


Rummy is an Interesting game to try your skills on. You can always be a master of the game by practising the game daily. There are many variations of rummy that are played worldwide. All variants follow the basic draw and discard game play; only minor rule changes are present in each variant. The love for the game in the different parts of the globe is evident from the variants the game of rummy holds. The Indian version of rummy is the 13 card rummy variant. Apart from the 13 card and 21 card variants that are hosted in Junglee Rummy, there are some variants like Contract Rummy, Rummy 500, Shanghai Rummy etc that are played in different parts of the world. Some of the major rummy variants are described below.

Contract Rummy

Contract rummy is an imperative variant of rummy which is played in different locations by different names such as ‘wild rummy’, ‘joker rummy’ etc. Contract rummy is believed to be originated from the Gin rummy and the rules of this variant is similar to Gin Rummy. The wild card jokers as well as the in-deck printed jokers are used in this variant of the game.

There are seven deals for contract rummy and the rules associated with the deal changes on every deal. 10 cards are dealt to the players in the first four deals of the game and 12 cards for the last 3 deals. The objective of the game is similar to all the rummy games, to make sets and sequences with the dealt hand. There are requirements (contracts) for each of the deal. Below mentioned are the different types of contracts required for the game.

  1. Two sets of 3 cards
  2. One set of 3 cards and a Sequence of 4 cards
  3. Two Sequences of 4 cards
  4. Three Sets of 3 cards
  5. Two Sets of 3 cards and One Sequence of 4 cards
  6. One Set of 3 cards and Two Sequences of 4 cards
  7. Three Sequences of 4 cards (No discard)

Shanghai Rummy

Shanghai Rummy is another prominent rummy variant. 2 decks of cards are used while playing the game with up to 4 players and 3 decks are used for more than five players. Unlike contract rummy, there are 10 deals to play in Shanghai rummy and the rules of the 10 hands are different.

Gameplay of Shanghai Rummy is also similar to other rummy games and every player is dealt with 11 cards. The objective is to draw a card and discard a card to make sets and sequences. There is an option to ‘Buy’ cards where you can make a move even if it is not your turn to play. The maximum number of buys in a hand is limited to 2.

  1. 2 aces and a set of 3 cards
  2. 2 sets of 3 cards
  3. 1 set of 3 cards & sequence of 4 cards
  4. 2 sequences of 3 cards
  5. 3 sets of 3 cards
  6. 2 sets of 3 cards & 1 sequence of 4 cards
  7. 1 set of 3 cards and 2 sequences of 4 cards
  8. 3 sequences of 4 cards
  9. 1 sequence of 7 cards and 1 set of 3 cards
  10. 1 sequence of 5 cards and 1 sequence of 6 cards
