The Joy of Winning: Story of a Humble Man from Madurai

The Rummy Premier League was an eye-opener. The tournament introduced us to people who we could have never met, if not for the contest. Not only did the contest reintroduce us to the popularity of the game; it gave us an opportunity to take the game a notch above and introduce it to people who had never played an online version of their beloved rummy online. Moreover, many predefined notions were broken, like how Rummy is a Man’s Game and How a Woman Broke the Myth. The contest saw Aditi, a first-time online rummy player, and RPL 1 winner completely break that stereotype. Continuing on our story from last week, this week’s post is about Mr. Purusothaman, a humble man from Madurai, who became the 1^st runner-up of the Rummy Premier League season 1-- an avid rummy player and a family man. He was introduced to the game by his father when he was just a young boy and he has been playing the game ever since. He is one amongst the many, who have always enjoyed playing the game; but, could have never imagined that they could one day end up winning a professional rummy tournament. When he won the contest, he was elated and shocked at the same time. We could easily make out his disbelief when we called to inform him that he was one of the winning participants. His excitement was equally visible when we went to Madurai to hand him the keys to his brand new Royal Enfield. Mr. Purusothaman not only won a Royal Enfield in the RPL 1, he won the hearts of every member of the team from Junglee Rummy who went to hand him the prize with his smile, humility, and graceful nature. All this made us realize one thing, that even though rummy has been a game which finds a lot of reference in popular pop culture; many people were unaware about the popularity of the online version of the game. Moreover, they were mostly unaware that they could actually participate in tournaments to win cash and other prizes; except for a few pockets in mostly urban India. For us, the Rummy Premier League changed that status quo by allowing us to take the game to the next level. Standing testimony is the fact that all our winners come from humble backgrounds. Meaning, the Rummy Premier League has been hugely successful in taking the online version of the game from the confines of India’s major metropolitan cities, and into the heart of India.
