Rummy Tips and Tricks #15 – Set or Sequence

What will you make in rummy – A sequence of 6♠ 7♠ 8♠? Or a set of 8♦ 8♣ 8♠?

Some will choose to make a sequence while others will pick a set. Both are viable options but chances of winning will increase if you choose to make a sequence.

If you make a sequence of 6♠ 7♠ 8♠, you have better chances of continuing the set with 5♠ or 9♠. But, if you make a set of 8♦ 8♣ 8♠, you will have to discard either 6♠ or 7♠. You will miss the chance to make a sequence if either 5♠ or 9♠ is next on the decks.

Your opponents may have less chances of making a similar set as you are already using two 8s. So, you can discard one of the 8’s and wait for one or more cards to finish the game.

Rummy is a game of probability where you need to calculate the chances of hitting the desired cards that will make your hand complete. If you make a sequence, you have chances of getting more cards that will continue the sequence. However, making sets will limit such probability as a set can have a maximum of only 4 cards.
