The new strain of the coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 has brought the world to a standstill by causing the disease called COVID-19 all across the world, but what it can’t stop is the human resilience and our spirit to fight back in times of crisis. As we sit back to defeat the virus, there are a few things that you can do to keep yourself, your family and your loved ones safe until this infection is completely gone.
In this blog post, we will share a few dos and don’ts that will help you sail through this crisis. But before we start, remember that we all have a big part to play in defeating the pandemic and we are all together in this fight.
“Social distancing” is a relatively new term for Indians because being close to our loved ones and welcoming almost everyone with open arms has been a part of our culture since time immemorial.
However, social distancing is the need of the hour and the greater physical distance we can maintain, the better. It’s because COVID-19 spreads via droplets released by an infected person when he/she coughs and sneezes; the virus enters the respiratory system of healthy people and infects them.
Maintaining a distance of 1 meter or more when meeting or greeting someone can keep you and your family safe from contracting the disease. The best yet is not to shake hands with anyone in these times of a pandemic and stick to the good old “Namaste!”
Doctors and researchers all over the world have been talking about the importance of washing hands for at least 20 seconds and there is a reason for that. A virus is protected by a layer of protein and fat, and soap destroys it but it takes the soap 20 seconds to destroy the virus.
To understand why 20 seconds of washing your hands with soap is recommended, take a look at the video below:
Also, make sure that you carry a hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol content. Use it before touching your face, eyes or nose after you touch a surface or anything. Remember, practicing hand and respiratory hygiene is one of your best defences against the virus!
The 21-day lockdown that we are under isn’t a punishment: it’s one of the most effective ways of stopping the spread of the disease. As the virus only spreads via human-to-human contact, it’s crucial that each one of us stays back home to break the chain.
This is your chance to do your part for the nation, and you can decide where you stand in all of this. Moreover, take this opportunity to spend more time with your family, catch up with friends over a video conference call or just read your favorite book or watch that movie you weren’t able to make time for. Better yet, put this time to find your inner peace and work on something that you’ve always wanted to but then life happened and you got stuck in the same routine every single day.
So, in a way this lockdown will not only weaken the virus, but also help you find a version of yourself that you never knew existed!
Stay home, stay safe!
