Rummy vs Teen Patti

Why Rummy, a Skill Game, Is Better Than Teen Patti

Rummy and Teen Patti are card games very popular on the Indian subcontinent. The online versions of these games are taking the world by storm. But when you compare the two games, rummy stands out to be a better competitor. This is because rummy is a game of skill and it tests your analytical and decision making skills. It requires proper strategy and planning to succeed in the game. On the other hand, Teen Patti is a game of chance and you do not need to invest your brain into the game. Your fate would decide your success in the game.

Skill games like rummy are gaining popularity among masses. These games are filled with unlimited fun and entertainment. Besides, you can enjoy this game without worrying about stakes. If you want to know why rummy, a skill game is better than teen patti then keep reading.

Rummy: This game originated in the United States.

Teen Patti: Teen patti originated on the Indian subcontinent. It is based on the English card game called three-card brag.

Number of Players and Card Decks

Rummy: Rummy is usually played by 2 to 6 players using one or two standard decks of cards plus one printed Joker per deck. The number of cards dealt to each player depends on the variation of rummy. In Indian rummy, each player gets 13 cards to play the game.

Teen Patti: A maximum of 10 players can play the game using a standard deck of 52 cards. Each player plays using three cards only.

Rummy: The Joker plays an important role in rummy. It is used to replace any missing card and form an impure sequence or a set. There are two types of Jokers: wild and printed Jokers. A card chosen at random at the beginning of the game becomes the wild Joker. All other cards of the same rank also become wild Jokers.

Teen Patti: Jokers are not used in this game.

Objective of the Game

Rummy: Whether you play rummy online or in the real world, the objective of the game is to arrange all your cards in sequences, or sequences and sets, and make a declaration first. In order to make a valid declaration, you must have at least two sequences, out of which at least one must be a pure sequence.

Teen Patti: The objective of teen patti is to have the best three-card hand and maximize the pot.

Ranking of Cards

Rummy: In rummy, the cards from highest to lowest are as follows:

A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.

Teen Patti: In this game, the rankings of card sets from highest to lowest is as follows:

Trio or Trail: Three cards of the same rank but different suits makes a trio. The highest trio is three aces (A’s) and the lowest is three 2s.

Straight Run: Three sequential cards of the same suit make a straight run. The highest straight run is A2-3 of any suit, then A-Q-K, K-J-Q and so on.

Normal Run: It has three sequential cards of different suits. For example: 4♦-5♠️-6♥ or 10♣️-J♦-Q♠️.

Color/Flush: Three cards of the same suit make a color/flush. The cards are usually random. If two or three players have a flush each, the player with the highest card wins. For example, 2♥- 4♥-K♥ is a flush.

Pair: Two cards of the same rank make a pair. Among two pairs, the pair with the highest card is the winner. If both the pairs are equal, the third card is chosen to decide the winner. For example, 3♣️-3♠️ and 9♦-9♥ are pairs.

High Card: If there are no pairs in any player’s hand, the winner is decided on the basis of the highest card.

Rummy: The play is simple and straightforward. Each player is dealt a certain number of cards (13 in case of Indian rummy). The remaining cards from the deck form the closed and open decks and are kept on the table. The closed deck is face down whereas the open deck is face up and all the discarded cards are accumulated here. You need to draw and discard cards from these decks to create sequences and sets. You cannot pick a Joker from the discard pile/open deck. You can refer to our how to play rummy section to learn more about game rules.

Teen Patti: Before the game begins, each player puts stakes in a pot kept on the table. Three cards are dealt to each player, one at a time. Then you have to place a wager on the player with the best hand. The wagering begins with the person to the left of the dealer and continues in a clockwise direction. Now you can either put an additional wager or choose to fold, i.e. drop out of the game. If you choose to fold, you quit that game permanently.

You can play as a blind or seen player. As a blind player, you cannot see the cards in your hand. You need to place a wager that is at least equal to the existing stakes but not more than twice that amount. As a seen player, you can see the cards in your hand and you need to wager an amount that is twice the existing stakes.

You can play as a blind player or as a seen player. But you must place a wager that is twice the existing stakes. This process continues until everyone on the table folds.

When everyone except one player has folded, the remaining player wins the prize pool irrespective of their cards. When two players are left to fold, their cards are revealed and compared.

Rummy: The value of each card is given in the table below.

As, Ks, Qs, Js10 points each
2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 10sSame as their face values

The score of the winner is zero. The points calculation for losing players depends on their unmatched cards. If 6♠️, 10♥ and 8♣️ are the unmatched cards in the losing player’s hand, the player’s score will be 6+10+8 = 24 points.

Teen Patti: Teen patti does not have a scoring system. You have to place a wager on the player with the best hand. The game continues until everyone except one player folds. The player left alone in the end wins the game.

Legality of the Game

Rummy: It is absolutely legal to play rummy online for both real money and free. The Supreme Court of India has declared it a game of skill and said that playing a game of skill for cash is legal, and not betting or gambling. The game can be won with skills and, of course, lots and lots of practice. You can play the game for real cash online.

Teen Patti: Teen patti is illegal to play for real money as it’s a game of luck/chance in which your success depends on your luck or chance. So you cannot play teen patti for cash as that is betting/gambling, which is illegal.

It is clear that rummy is a skill based game that requires knowledge and skills to become successful whereas teen patti is a game of chance.
