Card games are very popular in India and Call Break is one of them. It is a variation of Spades that involves tricks and bidding. Also known as lakdi and Call Bridge, this strategic game is played by 4 players. It is available online too and players can enjoy it in single and multiplayer modes.
The Call Break game, popular in South Asian countries like India and Nepal, originated a hundred years ago. It is very simple and fun to play. Let’s take a closer look at the different aspects of the game.
Cards and Trump Suit
Call Break is a trick-taking game where each player aims to win more tricks than the others to win the game. The game is played by 4 players using a 52-card standard deck, and each player gets 13 cards. A game consists of five rounds. Spades is the trump suit. The ranking of cards from highest to lowest is as follows: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
The objective of Call Break is to win the highest number of bids or tricks. Suppose you call/bid on 5 tricks at the beginning of a round, you will have to win 5 or more tricks to get a positive score in the round. If the bids won by you are less than 5, you will get negative points equal to your call.
How to Play the Call Break Game
Call Break game rules are simple and straightforward. Take a look at them below.
Dealing: At the beginning of each round, 13 cards are dealt to each playe
Trump Suit: In Call Break, Spades is the predefined trump suit and it cannot be changed.
Calls: Every player has to call a number/bid on a number of tricks immediately after cards are dealt. The lowest call/bid is 2 and the highest is 12.
Play: A random player leads the first trick by discarding a card of his/her choice. Then the other players at the table have to discard cards of the same suit, called the lead suit, but a higher value than the previous card. If a player is unable to follow the suit because of lack of cards of the lead suit, they can play a trump card, i.e.a Spade, to win the trick. If they don’t have a trump card, they can discard any card but then they won’t win that trick. The player who wins a trick plays the first card for the next trick.
Suppose you are leading a trick and you play the 9 of Hearts. The next player plays the ace of Hearts. The third player can outplay you both by playing any card of Spades as Spades is the trump suit. However, the fourth player can win the trick by playing a higher value trump card. For example, if the third player played the 5 of Spades, the fourth player can win the trick by playing the 6 of Spades or a higher Spade.
How Scores Are Calculated in the Call Break Game
In a Call Break game, you have to win at least as many tricks as you called or bid on at the beginning of the game. If you take fewer tricks than your call, you get minus points equal to the call. On the other hand, if you win bids equal to or more than your call, you get points equal to your call plus 0.1 points for each extra bid won.
