Indian Rummy is a draw-and-discard game played by 2 to 6 players. Each player gets 13 cards, which have to be arranged in sequences, or sequences and sets. The remaining cards are placed on the table in two piles called open and closed decks. The player who makes a valid declaration first wins the game.

From low to high, the cards in each suit are as follows: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, Jack, Queen and King. The numbered cards are worth their face values while Kings, Queens, Jacks, and Aces are worth 10 points each. The winner of a rummy card game gets zero points.

Objective of Rummy

The objective of rummy is to arrange all your 13 cards in sequences, or sequences and sets. To win, you need to form at least two sequences out of which at least one must be a pure sequence. If you declare your hand without a pure sequence, you will not only lose but also get penalty points.

What Are Rummy Rules?

Rummy rules are simple and straightforward. Let’s take a look at them.

  1. Indian Rummy is played by 2 to 6 players using one or two decks of cards (2 decks when there are more than 2 players). Every player at the table gets 13 cards.
  2. A random card is selected as the wild Joker and all the cards of the value become wild Jokers in the game.
  3. On each turn, you need to draw/pick a card from any of the two piles of cards on the table: the closed deck and the open deck. After picking a card, you have to discard one of your cards. The cards in the closed deck are placed face down, whereas the cards in the open deck are placed face up.
  4. You have to arrange all your 13 cards in sequences, or sequences and sets. There should be at least two sequences out of which one must be a pure sequence. You can include both printed and wild Jokers in impure sequences and sets. The player who makes a valid declaration first wins the game.

What is a sequence in Rummy?

A sequence is a group of cards that has three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. There are two types of sequences: pure and impure sequences.

Pure Sequence

A pure sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. No card can be replaced by a Joker in a pure sequence.

Examples of Pure Sequences

How to Form Sequence in Rummy

6♦-7♦-8♦ (A pure sequence consisting of three consecutive cards of Diamonds. No card has been replaced by a Joker.)

A♣-2♣-3♣4♣ (A pure sequence consisting of four consecutive cards of Clubs. No card has been replaced by a Joker.)

Impure Sequence

An impure sequence is a group of two or more consecutive cards of the same suit and one or more Jokers used as a substitute card/substitute cards.

How to Form Impure Sequence in Rummy

6♦-7♦-8 (In this impure sequence, the 8 of Diamonds is a wild Joker. It has replaced the 5 of Spades.)

10♥-J♥-PJ-K♥ (In this impure sequence, the printed Joker has been used to replace the Queen of Hearts.)

What is a Set?

Three or four cards of the same value but different suits form a set. A set cannot have more than one card from a suit. You can use one or more Jokers to replace any other card(s) in a set.

Set without Joker in rummy Without a Joker

7-7-7 (This set has 7s from three different suits.)

2-2-2-2 (This set has 2s from four different suits.)

Set with a Joker in rummy With a Joker

5-5-K (In this set, the King of Hearts is a wild Joker.)

9-9-9-PJ (In this set, the printed Joker is optional.)

Q-PJ-Q (The printed Joker has been used to complete the set.)

A-2-2 (In this set, the 2s are wild Jokers.)

Importance of Jokers in Rummy

Jokers play a very special role in rummy and can help you win. There are two types of Jokers used in the game.

Printed Joker: As the name suggests, a printed Joker has the picture of a Joker printed on it. This card can be used as a substitute for any missing card and can help you form a set or an impure sequence. Look at the impure sequence and the set below to understand how the printed Joker can be used in rummy.

Using Printed Joker in Rummy

8-9-PJ (The printed Joker has replaced the 10?. It’s an impure sequence.)

2-2-PJ (In this set, the printed Joker has replaced the 2 of Clubs or Hearts).

Wild Joker: The wild Joker is randomly picked at the beginning of the game. Just like the printed Joker, the wild Joker can also be used as a substitute for any missing card and helps form an impure sequence or a set.

Using Wild Joker in Rummy

In the sequence 6-7-8-9, the 8 is a wild Joker. So it’s an impure sequence.

In the set 6-6-3, the 3 is a wild Joker.

A wild Joker can be used in a pure sequence too. But in a pure sequence, it must be used in its original value and as a card of its original suit, not as a substitute card/Joker.

How to Make a Valid Declaration in a Rummy Game

Valid Declaration

To win an Indian Rummy game, you have to arrange all your 13 cards in sequences, or sequences and sets, according to rummy rules. Then you have to finish the game by discarding one of your cards to the “Finish” slot and declare your hand. The player who makes a valid declaration first is the winner of the game. The winner’s score is zero.

To make a valid declaration, you need to fulfill the following three conditions

Pure sequence: To win a rummy game, you must create at least one pure sequence. A pure sequence consists of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. In a pure sequence, the Joker cannot be used as a substitute card. Any declaration made without forming at least one pure sequence is invalid. You can create more than one pure sequence too.

Second sequence: In addition to a pure sequence, you need to form a second sequence, which can be a pure sequence or an impure sequence. As explained above, an impure sequence has two or more cards of the same suit and a Joker as a substitute for any other card. Forming two sequences is mandatory, but you can also form more than two sequences. Forming sets is optional.

All your cards should be melded: All the cards that are not part of your two sequences should be arranged in other sequences or sets. Forming sets is optional but all your cards must be arranged in sequences, or sequences and sets. Look at the example of a valid declaration below.

How to Make a Valid Declaration in a Rummy Game

Invalid Declaration

To win an Indian Rummy game, you have to arrange all your 13 cards in sequences, or sequences and sets, according to rummy rules. Then you have to finish the game by discarding one of your cards to the “Finish” slot and declare your hand. The player who makes a valid declaration first is the winner of the game. The winner’s score is zero.

Invalid Declaration in Rummy

The declaration above is invalid because it does not have a pure sequence and not all cards in it have been melded. Only 7 and 8 in the first group are from the same suit; 9 is from a different suit, so the group is not a sequence.

invalid declaration 2

Again, the first group of cards is supposed to be an impure sequence, but it has one card (3) from a different suit. So it is not a sequence, and the declaration is invalid.

invalid declaration 3

At least two sequences are required for a valid declaration, but the above example has only one sequence and three sets. So this is an invalid declaration.

invalid declaration 4

This declaration is invalid because 8-8-8 is not a valid set as it has two cards from the same suit (). A set cannot have more than one card from a suit.

What are Winning Tips & Tricks For Rummy Game?

you should learn rummy tips and tricks and use them to outsmart your opponents. Here are some tips and tricks that will help you ace the game.

Prioritize creating a pure sequence: When cards are dealt, focus on creating a pure sequence first. It is impossible to win without having a pure sequence in your hand.

Discard high-value cards early on: In rummy, points have a negative value and high cards increase the risk of losing by a big margin. So if you have unmatched high cards, discard them early on in the game.

Look for connecting cards: Collect connecting cards as they help you form sequences and sets. Suppose you have the following cards: 5,6,8,9. Look for 7, which you can use with 5 and 6 (5-6-7) or with 8 and 9 (7-8-9). Yu can also form a single sequence of 5-6-7-8-9 , if you already have another sequence.

Observe your opponents’ moves: One of the best ways to increase your chances of winning is to keep an eye on your opponents’ moves. Suppose your opponent picks the 4 discarded by you. Do not discard 2,3,5, 6 or the 4 of any suit if you have them.

Use Jokers wisely - Jokers play a crucial role in the game of rummy. Use them smartly to form sets or impure sequences.

How Does the Scoring System Works in The Game of Rummy?

Common Rules for Point Calculation

  • Card
  • Value
  • Value of Joker in Rummy Printed Joker/Wild Joker
  • Zero
  • Value of Numbered Cards in Rummy Numbered Card
  • Worth their face value
  • Value of High Value Cards in Rummy High Value Cards: Jack, Queen, King, Ace
  • 10 points each
  • Value of Ace Card in Rummy Example: Ace , 2, 3
  • 10 points, 2 points, 3 points

Suppose 4 players are playing a Points Rummy game and Player 4 is the winner of the game. Let us understand the point calculation for the game.

Rummy combination except a pure sequence

Status: The player has created all the required combinations except a pure sequence.

Missing Turn in rummy

Status: The player missed his turn 3 times in a row.

Failing to meld cards in rummy

Status: The player failed to meld 4 cards.

Winning Combination in Rummy

Status: The player has created a pure sequence, a second sequence, and 2 sets. All the cards are melded.

Point Calculation for Losing Players

Wrong Declaration: For a wrong declaration (a declaration made before the winner) in a Points Rummy game, the penalty points are 80 irrespective of the cards in the player’s hand. So double-check your hand before making a declaration.

First Drop: If you quit the game as your very first move without picking a card, it is called a first drop. The penalty points for a first drop are 20 in a Points Rummy game.

Middle Drop: If you drop out of a Points Rummy game any time after your first turn, you will get 40 points as a penalty.

Consecutive Misses: If you miss three consecutive turns, you will be automatically dropped out of the game. It will be considered a middle drop and you will get a penalty of 40 points.

Losing Players with a Valid Hand: Players who declare their combinations second and have a valid hand get 2 points. So, if you win a game against players who also have a valid hand, the losing players with valid hands lose by two points each.

Leaving the Table: You will get a Middle Drop of 40 points, if you leave the table after picking a card.

Point Calculation in Cash Rummy Games on Junglee Rummy

Everyone loves winning cash prizes, right? But do you know how winnings are calculated in cash rummy games? Junglee Rummy uses the following simple formulas to determine the prize amount.

1. Points Rummy

In Points Rummy, each point has a pre-decided value in rupees. The winner gets the amount lost by all the losing players at the table after the deduction of a very small Junglee Rummy fee.

The formula used to calculate the winnings in a Points Rummy game is as follows:

Winnings = Sum of the points of all the losing players x Value of each point in rupees – Junglee Rummy fee.

Example

Suppose there are 4 players playing a Points Rummy game for real cash at a Rs.160 table with Rs. 2 per point. Player 1 wins the game, and the other 3 players lose by 20, 40 and 50 points, respectively. In this case, the winnings will be calculated as: 2 x (20 + 40 +50) = Rs. 220. This amount will be added to the winner’s account after the deduction of the Junglee Rummy fee.

2. Pool Rummy

The following formula is used to calculate winnings in a Pool Rummy game:

Winnings = (Entry fee x Number of players) – Junglee Rummy fee.

Example

Suppose 4 players are playing a Pool Rummy game that has a fixed entry fee of Rs. 100. The prize pool of the game will be 100x4= Rs. 400. The winner of the game will get the following amount as the prize: Rs. 400 – Junglee Rummy fee.

3. Deals Rummy

In Deals Rummy, the winner gets chips equal to the points lost by the losing player.

The formula used to calculate winnings for each deal in Deals Rummy is as follows:

Winnings = (Entry Fee × Number of Players) – Junglee Rummy Fee

Example

Imagine 2 players are playing a Deals Rummy game and the entry fee is Rs. 5 each. Player 2 declares his cards. The winnings calculated will be as follows -

Winnings = (5x2) – Junglee Rummy Fee.

Important Rummy Terms

Here are the important rummy terms you should know to understand the game.

Rummy Table

In online rummy, players play the game at a virtual table. Typically 2 to 6 players can play at one table.

Sorting

The sorting of cards is done at the beginning of the game. Simply click on the “Sort” button and your cards will be automatically arranged.

Deal/Round

In rummy, a deal/round begins with the dealing of cards and ends when a player successfully declares their hand.

Dealing

At the beginning of a rummy game, cards are dealt to each player randomly. This is known as dealing.

Drawing and Discarding

In a rummy card game, you can draw/pick cards from the closed deck (cards placed face down) or the open deck (cards discarded by players and placed face up). On each turn, you have to draw a card and then get rid of one of your cards. This action of getting rid of your cards is known as discarding.

Melding

When cards have been dealt, players have to arrange their cards in sequences, or sequences and sets. The act of arranging cards in valid groups is known as melding.

Printed and Wild Jokers

Jokers are essential to a rummy game. There are two types of Jokers: printed Jokers (1 per deck) and wild Jokers (4 per deck). Both types of Jokers can be used as substitutes for any missing cards. They help to form sets and impure sequences. A random card is selected as the wild Joker at the beginning of the game and then the cards of that value in all the four suits become wild Jokers.

Drop

Before drawing your first card or in the middle of a game, you can choose to opt out of the deal/game. This is known as a drop. You get some penalty points for dropping out of a game/deal. For example, in a Points Rummy game, you get 20 points for dropping out as your very first move in the game and 40 points for dropping out anytime after picking a card. Dropping in the middle of a game is called a middle drop.

Chips

Chips are counters that you play for when you play practice games on Junglee Rummy. You get free chips on registering with Junglee Rummy and you can reload more chips when you run short of them. When you join a practice game, a predefined number of chips will be deducted from your chip balance. When you win, the chips won are credited to your account.
