Robbers’ Rummy can be played by two or more players with two standard decks of 52 cards each. 11 cards are dealt to each player and the remaining cards are put face down as a stockpile. The objective of the game is to reduce the number of cards in your hand by placing them on the table forming melds. A meld is a sequence of three or more cards of the same suit or a group of three or four cards of the same rank but different suits.
On their turn, the players can place one or more cards on the table to form melds. They have the option to rearrange any or all the melds on the table by changing the identification of Joker cards, provided all the cards on the table can be used to form melds. The cards on the table have to remain on the table until any player places a card on the table from his/her hand.
The game is called Robbers’ Rummy because any meld comprising of four cards can be reduced to a regular three-card meld by robbing cards. A card that gets robbed can be used to form other melds. The liberty to ‘rob’ makes the game far more exciting and aggressive than other forms of rummy games.
A player who does not place at least one of his/her cards on the table must draw a card from the stockpile and use it in his/her hand. Similarly, a player who places one or more cards on the table has to draw a card from the stockpile. After drawing a card, the player has the option to place any card on the table or leave to draw another card by yielding it to the next player. The game continues until a player places all the cards in his/her hand on the table forming melds.
