Robbers’ Rummy can be played with two or more players with two standard decks of 52 cards. 11 cards are dealt to each player and the remaining cards are kept as the stock pile with face down cards. The objective of the game is to reduce the number of cards in the hand by placing them on the table by forming melds. A meld is a sequence of three or more cards of the same suit or a group of three or four cards of the same rank but in different suits.
During the player’s turn, they can place one or more cards on the table to form melds. They have the option to rearrange any or all the melds on the table by changing the identification of Joker cards, provided all the cards on the table can be used to form melds. The cards on the table have to remain on the table before placing any hand card.
The game is called Robbers’ Rummy because any meld comprising of four cards can be reduced to a regular three-card meld by robbing cards. The card that got robbed can be used to form other melds. The liberty to ‘rob’ makes the game far more exciting and offensive than other forms of rummy games.
Player who does not place at least one card from the hand must draw a card from the stock pile to the hand. Similarly, a player who places one or more cards on the table has to draw a card from the stock pile. After drawing a card, players have the option to place any card on the table or leave to draw another card by yielding it to the next player. The game continues until a player places all the cards in the hand on the table by forming melds.
