Zioncheck Rummy is quite a unique card game which has many similarities with the rules of other rummy variants. Although Zioncheck Rummy is not commonly played in India; however, its rules are very simple to learn. Most of the rules resemble those of Shanghai Rummy and Phase 10 card games. It is also said that Contract Rummy has originated from the rules of Zioncheck Rummy.
The objective of the game is to lay out all the cards in the combinations of sets or sequences. A player can 'lay down' or 'go down' during his or her turn, and the one who finishes all the cards in hand is declared the winner.
As the rules of the game bear close resemblance to Shanghai and Contract Rummy games, it is quite easy to learn and play. It is played with multiple decks of standard 54 cards with Jokers, and each game is based on six hands. 10 cards are dealt to each player for the first four hands and 11 cards are dealt on fifth hand and 14 cards on the last hand. Rest of the cards are placed face down to form the draw pile. Each player has the option to pick a card from the draw pile or pick a card from the discard pile.
Jokers are also used in Zioncheck Rummy; they can replace any card to form a sequence or set. For example, if 5 is the wild joker, one can form sequences of 7-9-10-5-K-Q, as the Card 5 has replaced the Jack to form a sequence of 7-9-10-J-K-Q. However, Jokers have to be used only when it is absolutely necessary; Zioncheck Rummy is considered as an old parlour game, and it is considered rude if a Joker is used in a group.
The game continues until one of the players ‘goes out’ by discarding the last card in hand. The winner gets zero points while other players get points according to the cards they hold in their hand. Aces and Jokers have 15 points; Jack, Queens and Kings have 10 points and all other cards from 2 to 9 have 5 points.
These interesting rules and challenging gameplay make Zioncheck Rummy a really exciting card game. Try this new rummy variation with your friends and have great fun. Learn more about new variations on JungleeRummy.com!
