Zioncheck Rummy is quite a unique card game that has many similarities with the rules of other rummy variants. Zioncheck Rummy is not commonly played in India, but its rules are very simple to learn. Most of the rules resemble those of Shanghai Rummy and Phase 10 card games. It is also said that Contract Rummy originated from Zioncheck Rummy.
The objective of the game is to lay out all the cards in the combinations of sets or sequences. A player can ‘lay down’ or ‘go down’ on his or her turn, and the one who lays down all his/her cards is declared the winner.
As the game bears close resemblance to Shanghai and Contract Rummy games, it is quite easy to learn and play. Zioncheck Rummy is played with multiple standard decks of 54 cards each including Jokers, and each game consists of six hands. 10 cards are dealt to each player at the beginning of each of the first four hands and 11 cards are dealt in fifth hand and 14 cards in the last hand. The rest of the cards are placed face down to form the draw pile. Each player has the option to pick a card, on his/her turn, from the draw pile or from the discard pile.
Jokers are also used in Zioncheck Rummy; they can replace any card to form a sequence or a set. For example, if 5 is the wild Joker, one can form sequences of 7-9-10-5-K-Q, as Card 5 has replaced the Jack to form a sequence of 7-9-10-J-K-Q. However, Jokers have to be used only when it is absolutely necessary. Zioncheck Rummy is considered an old parlor game, and using a Joker in a group is considered rude.
A game of Zioncheck Rummy continues until one of the players ‘goes out’ by discarding the last card in his/her hand. The winner gets zero points while the other players get points equal to the total value of the cards in their hand. Aces and Jokers are worth 15 points each; Jack, Queens and Kings are worth 10 points each and all other cards from 2 to 9 are worth 5 points each.
These interesting rules and its challenging gameplay make Zioncheck Rummy a really exciting card game. Try this new rummy variation with your friends and have great fun. Learn more rummy variations on JungleeRummy.com!
