General FAQs

I don't know how to play rummy. How can I learn how to play rummy?

Rummy is one of the most popular card games of picks and discards, and it is easy to learn. Click on how to play rummy and learn the game in quick and easy steps.

A table where the game of rummy is played is called a Rummy table.

In rummy, the Joker is a card that can be used as a trump card. It can be used in place of any missing card to form a set or sequence. There are two types of Jokers: printed Jokers and wild cards. While printed Jokers come with a joker’s picture printed on them, wild cards are chosen randomly at the beginning of each game. Wild cards also act as Jokers, so they are a kind of additional Jokers.

When a rummy game begins, each player has their cards in their hand, and at the center of the table, there is a stack of cards placed face down (called the closed deck) and a card placed face up (called the open deck or discard pile). Each player picks a card from the closed deck or open deck on their turn, which is called drawing. Then they get rid of one of their cards by putting it on the open deck, which is called discarding. Thus, to draw is to pick a card and to discard is to get rid of one.

Rummy is a game of skill. It requires patience, focus and strategies for one to succeed. Indian Rummy is played by 2 to 6 players and 13 cards are dealt to each player by the dealer, who is decided by making a toss. One by one, clockwise, each player gets to deal cards in subsequent games. However, in online rummy you don’t have to bother about that as cards are dealt, absolutely randomly, by the game program automatically, which also does away with any possibility of unfair dealing.

Your winning or losing a rummy game depends on how you sort your cards and how you play your moves. Sorting of cards is grouping cards in a way that they form sets or sequences or are easier to arrange/use in sets and sequences later. It’s better to sort your cards into three groups of three cards each and a fourth group of four cards arranged in ascending order of their values. For example: Ace-2-3; 4-5-6; 7-8-9; 10-Jack-Queen-King.

Every player has the option to choose whether or not they want to play a game/a particular round in a game before drawing their first card. If they decide not to play a game/round before drawing their first card, then it is a drop, an initial drop. If a player drops out of a 101 Pool game, they get 20 points as a penalty. The penalty points for dropping out of a 201 Pool game are 25. A player cannot drop out of a Best of 2 or Best of 3 game.

Before a player can be declared the winner of a game, he/she has to declare/show their hand of cards for validation. This is called showing/declaring. Let’s see what kind of hands are invalid.

  • There should be a minimum of at least two sequences including one pure sequence and the remaining cards have to be arranged in sets or sequences
  • The absence of a pure sequence makes a declaration invalid even if there are two sequences and all the cards are in sequences and sets.
  • Just one sequence is not enough: a valid hand has to have at least two sequences.
  • The presence of more than 4 cards in a set makes the set invalid. Even a wild card or Joker cannot be added as a fifth card.
  • A group of cards with more than one card of the same suit doesn’t form a valid set.

Online Rummy has a number of variations. However, the Points Rummy format of 13-card Indian Rummy is the most popular game of online rummy. The reason the 13-card game is more popular than the 21-card game is that it’s very easy to learn and play. The game gets over in a shorter time as there are a smaller number of cards. That inspires you to play more and keeps you immersed once you get the momentum. The 13-cards rummy game is the most popular game among online rummy games played with any mobile rummy app.

Though playing rummy is fun, it requires smart thinking, and those who like to play with numbers can master the game easily. Practice estimation in rummy to learn the concept of probability and become

  1. Keep an eye on your opponent’s moves and estimate the probabilities of Jokers being in their hand by analyzing how many Jokers you and the discard section have. As you practice this, it’ll become easier for you to estimate the probability of cards.
  2. Understand the probability of a card being useful in forming a sequence/set by observing how many cards close to that card have been discarded and whether your opponent has picked any cards close to the card in value.
  3. You can also figure out the probability of cards of a particular color by analyzing what color cards your opponents are mostly discarding.
  4. Similarly, if your opponent picks two or more cards of the same value but different suits, they are definitely going for a set of the cards of that value.
  5. Lastly, and most importantly, watching the discard section closely will give you a fairly good idea of the cards that might be in the deck and with your opponent.

Here are some tips on increasing the winning rate in the entertaining and exciting game of rummy:

  • Always focus on melding a pure sequence first as it’s a must for a valid declaration.
  • Learn how to use the Joker wisely as it helps in forming impure sequences or a set.
  • Keep track of the cards your opponents discard and pick (cards picked from the open deck). Don’t give them a game by discarding cards that can be useful to them.
  • Discard high-value cards as early as possible to minimize your points. Even if you happen to lose, that strategy will help you avoid losing by a big margin.

If you are a cash player on Junglee Rummy, your Balance is divided into two Accounts: Deposit Account Balance and Withdrawable Account Balance.

The Deposit Account Balance includes all the amount you have deposited and earned bonus.

The Withdrawable Balance includes all the amount you have wagered and won.

Your total cash amount is the sum of the balance in your Deposit Account Balance and Withdrawable Account Balance. You can use all of this amount to play cash games on Junglee Rummy at any time.

For example, if your Deposit Account Balance is Rs. 100 and your Withdrawable Account balance is Rs. 400 (total balance = Rs. 500).

Example 1

You now make a deposit of Rs. 50 into your Junglee Rummy account.

The entire deposit is credited to your Deposit Account. Thus, your Deposit Account Balance is now Rs. 150 (Rs. 100 + Rs. 50) but your Withdrawable Account Balance remains Rs. 400. Your total balance is Rs. 550.

Example 2

You play a cash Points Rummy game with a minimum buy-in of Rs. 80 and win Rs. 10 in the game. The Rs. 10 that you won gets credited to your Withdrawable Account Balance. The Rs. 80 that you used as buy-in for the Points Rummy game gets transferred from your Deposit Account Balance to your Withdrawable Account Balance. Your Deposit Account Balance will now be Rs. 20 (Rs. 100 – Rs. 80) and your Withdrawable Account balance will now be Rs. 490 (Rs. 400 + Rs. 80 + Rs. 10). Your Total Balance will be Rs. 510.

Example 3

Now, let us take a case where you play a Points Rummy game with a minimum buy-in of Rs. 80 and lose Rs.10 in the game. The Rs. 80 that you used as the buy-in for the Points Rummy game now gets transferred from your Deposit Account Balance to your Withdrawable Account Balance. Out of this, Rs. 10 (your loss) is deducted from the Withdrawable Account Balance. Thus, your Deposit Account Balance will now be Rs. 20 (Rs. 100 - Rs. 80) and your Withdrawable Account Balance will now be Rs. 470 (Rs. 400 + Rs. 80 – Rs. 10). Your total Balance will be Rs. 470.

Example 4: You play a tournament (cash or promotional)

Let us say you play a cash tournament with an entry fee of Rs. 100 and win Rs. 500. The Rs. 500 that you won gets added to your Withdrawable Account Balance. Rs. 100 was deducted from your Deposit Account Balance as the entry fee. Thus, your Deposit Account Balance will now be Rs. 0 (Rs. 100 – Rs. 100) and your Withdrawable Account Balance will now be Rs. 900 (Rs. 400 + Rs. 500). Your total Balance will be Rs. 900.

If you make a deposit using the correct bonus code applicable and are eligible for a bonus, your bonus is automatically added to your Bonus Balance. The bonus is then disbursed from your Bonus Balance into your main account while you play cash games, at the rate of 20% (or 10 or 5% depending on the offer) of the amount you pay to your opponent when he/she wins a game against you.

For example, if you play and lose a points rummy game, and your opponent receives Rs. 100 from you, you will instantly receive Rs. 20 (20% of the amount paid to the opponent) from your Bonus Balance directly into your main account. The disbursements continue until the bonus balance becomes zero or the bonus code expires, whichever happens earlier.
