Sorting Cards: Rummy Strategy for Intermediate Players
Sorting Cards in Rummy
Rummy is a game that involves arranging cards in sequences and sets. The objective of the rummy game can be achieved only when you know how to sort your cards well. When cards are dealt, you should arrange your cards in order and by suit before making the first move. Sorting your cards works as the first step for making strategies for the game.
Sorting your cards smartly provides you with an edge over your competitors. So to help you understand the process well, here is an elaborate tutorial on card sorting.
What is Card Sorting?
Card sorting is the process of grouping cards or arranging cards in desired combinations. In rummy, cards are sorted keeping the formation of sequences and sets in mind. On Junglee Rummy, you can sort cards manually or by using the “Sort” button present on the game screen at the beginning of the game.
Once you sort your cards, you can quickly analyze the potential combinations and create sequences and sets. Sorting can also help you make better decisions while drawing and discarding cards.
How to Sort Cards on Junglee Rummy
When you join an Indian rummy , game you are dealt 13 cards. Now you can choose to sort the cards manually or use the “Sort” button. This green button appears at the bottom right of your game screen as soon as the cards are dealt. The button disappears when you sort your cards manually or once you make your first move. So it is important to use it immediately.
When you click on the “Sort” button, the cards are sorted according to their suits and sequence. For example, all cards of the Hearts suit will be grouped together. The 13 cards will be sorted into at least four combinations. If you have multiple jokers in your hand, they will be grouped separately. It is easier to create sequences and sets once your cards are sorted well. However, just sorting cards does not ensure your success in the game. You must know rummy rules and concepts and outsmart your opponents to win the game.
How to Sort Cards Manually
There are times when you may miss the “Sort” button on the screen. However, you can sort your cards manually too.
One way to go about this is to arrange your cards according to their suits. If you have multiple cards of the same suit, you can group them together. You can also follow a black-red-black or red-black-red order of sequences and sets to avoid any confusion while playing the game. This will also help you avoid discarding any card by mistake.
Another way to sort your cards is to follow a structure. Here are three ways to go about it:
- Possible Combinations (3 or 4 cards of the same suit in sequence)
- Unmatched cards according to suits
Group 2-way melds in such a way that they seem clear and logical to you. For instance, you have a 4♥ and a 5♥ in your hand. These cards should be grouped together so that when you get a 3♥ or a 6♥, you can add that card to the group and create a pure sequence.
Examples of Sorting
Suppose you join a 2-player points rummy game and you get the following cards:
3♣ 2♥ J♣ 7♥ 9♠ A♦ (wild joker) 4♠ K♣ 4♦ 2♦ 5♣ 6♣ 3♦
When you use the “Sort” button present on the screen, the cards will be sorted as follows:
2♦-3♦-4♦-A♦ (wild joker) | 3♣-5♣-6♣-J♣-K♣ | 2♥-7♥ | 4♠-9♠
If you want to sort the cards manually, you can do arrange them as follows:
2♦-3♦-4♦ | 3♣-5♣-6♣-A♦ (wild joker) | J♣-K♣ | 2♥-7♥ | 4♠-9♠
In the hand sorted manually, you have already formed a pure sequence (2♦-3♦-4♦) and an impure sequence (3♣-5♣-6♣-A♦ (WJ)) even before making the first move in the game. You can now focus on arranging the remaining cards in a sequence(s) or sets to make a valid declaration.
Sorting is a continuous process. You need to sort cards right from the beginning of the game till the end. When you draw cards from the open/closed deck on your turn, you need to arrange them and create the best possible combinations. You should sort cards regularly and explore various ways of finishing the game.
