General FAQs

I don't know how to play rummy. How can I learn to play rummy?

Indian Rummy is very simple to learn and play. It is played by 2 to 6 players at a time using one or two standard card decks. Each player is dealt 13 cards in hand and the remaining ones are used to form closed and open piles that are kept at the center of the table. When the game begins, each player picks a card from the closed deck or open deck and discards an unwanted card from their hand into the open deck to create different combinations of sequences or sequences and sets. The game continues until a player declares their cards, which prompts other players to declare theirs too. If the declaration made by the first player is valid, they win the game and get zero points. The remaining players gain a penalty on the basis of ungrouped cards in their hand.

Joker is the quintessential card in an Indian rummy game. It is used to replace a missing card in a sequence or a set. There are two types of jokers used in rummy: printed and wild cards. Printed jokers are readily available in a standard deck. Whereas a wild card is selected randomly at the beginning of the game. For example, if 5♠ is picked, then all 5s from other suits become wild jokers of that game.

In a rummy game, drawing involves picking cards from the closed and open deck on a player’s turn. When a card is drawn, an unwanted card from the player’s hand is thrown into the open pile. This is known as discarding. Drawing and discarding is crucial as it helps to arrange the cards into relevant combinations and declare them.

If a player drops out of a game/round any time after picking his/her first card, it is a middle drop. A player cannot drop out of a Best of 2 or Best of 3 games.

Before a player can be declared the winner of a game, he/she has to declare or show his/her hand of cards for validation. This is called showing/declaring. Let’s see what kind of hands are invalid.

  • There should be a minimum of two sequences, including at least one pure sequence, and the remaining cards have to be arranged in sets or sequences.
  • Just one sequence is not enough: a valid hand has to have at least two sequences.

The points system in rummy tournaments is as follows:

Card Value

→ All the face cards and the ace are worth 10 points each, and the number cards are worth points equal to their face values.

→ All the wild and printed jokers are worth zero points.

image

Winning Player's Points

→ A player wins by making a valid declaration first and gets 0 points.

Losing Player's Points

→ A losing player can get a maximum score of 80 points.

→ Losing players get points equal to the total points of the unmatched cards in their hand if they have formed a pure sequence.

→ A player who declares without completing the objective of the game or makes an invalid declaration gets 80 points.

→ If the losing player has not formed a pure sequence, then the points of all the cards of the player are added up.

Drop Points

→ If a player drops out anytime after picking a card, he/she gets a penalty of 40 points. It's called a middle drop.

Rummy chips are worth 1 point each in every rummy tournament. The winner gets all the chips at the end of the tournament.

Total Winnings = Sum of total points of all losing players X 1 tournament chip

For example if a player wins a game of six players, and five losing players lose by 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 points respectively, the winner will get 200 chips.

Each player is allocated a fixed number of chips at the beginning of each round in a rummy tournament, which is basically

80 X No. of players at the beginning of each round

The winner of a round gets a fresh allotment of chips to play in the next round.

Example: If 5 players have joined a tournament table, a total of 400 chips will be allocated to each player.

A rummy tournament starts with the allocation of a fixed number of chips to each participant. In each round, the players need to play a fixed number of games, and they are ranked according to the number of tournament chips they have at the table.

The player with the highest number of chips in hand at the end of a round becomes the winner and/or qualifies for the next round of a tournament. Also, the winner wins chips from losing players on the basis of their points.

In case of a tie, the player who won the last deal progresses to the next round. In case the last deal was also a tie, the player who won the deal before that progresses to the next round and so on the right to the first deal.
